- What does it mean to have a happy heart?
Thoughts: A happy heart describes someone who is at peace with their world, easy going, and in control of their stress. It's a frame of mind. Having a happy heart is a great thing to act on during Heart Month!
- How do I get a happy heart?
Thoughts: Live a balanced life - from nutrition and exercise to establishing good emotional health. Create some down time every day, daydream, breathe, laugh out loud, spend time doing something you truly enjoy every day. Be with people who bring you joy. Monitor how much news and social media you take in.
- Why should I care?
Thoughts: People with a happy heart live longer and enjoy better health. Your emotional health directly affects your heart's physical health. So think about the ways you can have a happy heart. Bring that balance into your life.
You should also care because stress is a major killer of a happy heart. Anything you can do to decrease stress in your life will bring value. That alone is why you should care.
- How do I start?
Thoughts: Make a list of things you can do to take care of your heart's emotional health. Examples... slow down, take deep breaths every hour, focus on the positive, laugh, spend more time with friends, move your body, get good sleep, meditate, use guided imagery, keep perspective in all things. Put the list on your mirror and on your car's dashboard...somewhere you will see it daily.
Focus on gratitude. When things are tough the healthier thing to do is focus on what you are grateful for. That positive focus can pull you off of negative feelings or feelings of despair. Remember, you get more of what you focus on, so pour on the positive.
